Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are metal posts that act as tooth roots to support artificial teeth. This tooth replacement option is an alternative to dentures and bridges.

Dental implants are made of titanium to offer a strong foundation for new replacement teeth, which are custom-made to match your surrounding natural teeth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

The benefits of dental implants are endless if you have severely decayed or missing teeth. Examples include:

  • No more gaps in your teeth
  • Clearer speech
  • Easier chewing
  • More self-confidence
  • An aesthetically pleasing smile

Dental implants are sturdy and long-lasting. And best of all, the implants look and feel like natural teeth.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

If you’re missing teeth but your gums are healthy and you have a jawbone that’s strong enough to support implants, or you’re willing to undergo bone grafting prior to implant placement, you’re likely a good candidate for the procedure.

After reviewing your medical and dental history, completing a dental exam, and using X-rays, your dentist lets you know if dental implants are right for you. They may not be right if you’re a heavy smoker or have uncontrolled diabetes or another complex medical condition.

What happens during dental implant placement?

Getting dental implants is a multiple-step process that takes several months. Bone grafting is the first step if it’s necessary to achieve a stronger jawbone.

If not, your dentist places metal posts into your jawbone. Afterward, you wait 6-12 weeks to allow for the bone to heal around the implants.

During the next appointment, your provider attaches a small connector post to each implant. They take impressions of your teeth to fabricate custom-made crowns.

When the new artificial teeth are ready, usually the same day using the Cerec® same-day system, your dentist secures them firmly to the implants, where they remain permanently.

How should I care for dental implants?

Care for dental implants the same way you do your natural teeth. Brush two times a day using a fluoride toothpaste and floss daily. Avoid chewing on hard objects such as ice, hard candy, and popcorn kernels. See your dentist for routine dental cleanings and exams.
